Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy is educated, intentional manipulation of soft tissue, which includes stretching & specific joint movements. It effects every system of the body including: Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Nervous, Endocrine, Cardiovascular, Lymphatic/ Immunity, Respiratory, Digestive, Urinary, & Reproductive. There are a myriad of benefits one may receive from massage, yet differing modalities cause different results: Repair of tissue, prevention of fibrosis in CT, breaking down of adhesions & in the healthy formation of elastic scar tissue.
Pain may be relieved by releasing trigger points held within myofascia, simply by increasing blood flow, initiating the release of our body’s natural pain killers-- endorphins/enkephalins, & stimulation of neural gating mechanisms which block pain receptors.
Massage can help to relieve some of the hormonal stress, pain & discomfort associated with pregnancy as well as in the growth & development of infants. Psychological stability is immediately enhanced by the body’s reaction to relaxation. A person may feel “clearer” and may even feel a deep sense of well-being after a massage session.
Approach:
There are many forms of massage & all can be loosely related to a distinct model of wellness pyramid. There are seven distinct levels of health which occur in the Wellness MassagePyramid (WMP). These have been taken from Tappan’s Handbook of Healing Massage Techniques and “given the multidimensional nature of wellness, you could be addressing different levels simultaneously. [...] The pyramid can be used to explain the many different reasons people seek massage” as well (page 11).
The WMP includes:
~Treatment for Illness/Injury
~Recovery from Illness/Injury
~Prevention of Illness/Injury
~Neutral Zone
~Health Maintenance
~Personal Growth
~Enjoyment of Life
We can provide a customized treatment plan for each client based on their level of health & health goals.
